Reading Spenser's The Faerie Queene for pleasure. This word recurs and I wanted to be sure of the meaning as I can't find it in any glossary. For instance:
It is the mynd, that maketh good or ill,
That maketh wretch or happie, rich or poore:
For some, that hath abundance at his will,
Hath not enough, but wants in greatest store;
And other, that hath litle, askes no more,
But in that litle is both rich and wise.
For wisedome is most riches; fooles therefore
They are, which fortunes doe by vowes deuize,
Sith each vnto himselfe his life may fortunize.
If someone could kindly also help with the meaning of the last two lines, that would be wonderful.
It is the mynd, that maketh good or ill,

For some, that hath abundance at his will,

And other, that hath litle, askes no more,

I am not sure of alternate outdated confusion of U and V, in the word, DEVIZE DEUISE, one ia verb and the other is an object. DEUICE??? Consult present day dictionalry, https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/devise-device-...

Example sentence:
Leave each one to his own devices.
That my fraile wit cannot deuize to what / It to compare, nor. Today would spell it devize.
Note from asker:
Seems logical. But then there is also this: https://i.postimg.cc/RZR3YR2q/deuize.png // Perhaps the confusion is caused by the many variants of spelling used. It's all very inconsistent. |
I located this reference after I posted my question. "Talk" doesn't seem logical in the context of the above though. I still think you're correct in your interpretation. Let's see if we get another opinion. Thanks for your answer! |
