so long local policies allow

English to French Medical Medical: Instruments dialyseurs
First adjust the blood pump speed, so long as the pressures and local policies allow.

Discussion

Daryo Dec 1, 2021:
@ AllegroTrans They ARE cases when you CAN say "The source text is wrong and I know best"

And that would apply to this text.

I happen to know personally few people who survived for years on dialysis.

Changing dialysis parameters "ONLY WHEN ALLOWED" - which would the literal interpretation of this ST as formulated - is a sure way to most literally kill a sizeable proportion of your patients. I know one guy who saved his own life by switching a to less dogmatic doctor, who treated each dialysis patient individually, instead of force feeding on everyone a one-fit-all solution.

I think that the author should be contacted to clarify the intended meaning, as a wrongly operated dialysis equipment definitely falls into the category of "deadly dangerous machinery".

BTW what is "local" is far from obvious - each hospital could have its own "local" policy, even withing the same town [not a hypothetical example]
AllegroTrans Nov 30, 2021:
@ Drmanu49: Obvious or not obvious You can't just say say "The source text is wrong and I know best"
That isn't translation, it's making unjustified assumptions
If the translator thinks there MAY be a mistake in the text then he/she can alert the client
Drmanu49 Nov 30, 2021:
Si un dialyseur est installé il est évident que son usage et les réglages sont autorisés. On ne parle alors que de recommandations et de s'y conformer. Le texte source n'est pas correct et autant utiliser les formules adéquates.

NB : il manque AS dans la question : "so long AS..."
Peer comment(s):

neutral Drmanu49 : Il manque le reste de laphrase qui va avec la condition.

La traduction du reste de la phrase n'est pas demandée.

Merci !
neutral Daryo : yes, that would first spring to mind - only problem being that it makes little real-life sense.

agree ph-b (X) : C'est ce que dit le texte en tout cas. Le traducteur peut toujours signaler au client les doutes qu'il pourrait avoir sur le contenu à traduire.

conformément signifiant en respectant les conditions.
Peer comment(s):

disagree AllegroTrans : There is a specific condition in the text ("so long as...allow") and instead of translating it you have said "in accordance with" which has a totally different meaning

conformément answers the condition. Wrong disagree again
disagree Tony M : Agree with A/T: 'conformement' is NOT the same as 'insofar as', 'to the extent that' / You can't just ignore the S/T, say "It is wrong and I know best what they ought to have said"! That's over-interpretation; in EN, the difference is vital.

I disagree with both of you the source text is bad and I am just using the common and most likely equivalent in adequate terms.
neutral Daryo : in the real word, your variant does makes FAR MORE sense than what's said in the ST, but "so long as" can hardly be interpreted to mean "conformément à"
