I`ve tried swallowing the bloody things in the hope that I would be discriminated against and not choke. I was wrong.

I found this link which calls them "Clé adhésive fixe" (pages 8, 9, 21)

They are coloured but the important part seems to be the keyed post (as described here on pages 6 and 7 of this brochure) without which, the plug cannot connect to the adapter.

: wires inside a cable are "colour coded" // for example in UK in an electrical cable the "Live" wire must be Blue, "Neutral" must be Brown (= their "colour code"), these tags can be of any colour, as long you can tell appart each cable, there's no "code".

these are tags used to "discriminate" (= tell apart) cables in a local area network, usually one at each end of the network cable.
Theoretically these tags could be also used to "discriminate" individual wires, but (1)wires inside a standard cable are normally already colour-coded (2) when building a LAN, no one is messing with individual wires so these tags must for cables.
