French term

collée ventralement

French to English Medical Livestock / Animal Husbandry pain management in cattle
I am translating a paper on pain management in cattle. I am not quite sure what "collée" means in the following sentence:

Enfin, les veaux traités avec un AINS étaient moins à risque de présenter une posture anomale de type queue anormalement relevée (ténesme) ou complètement collée ventralement avec dos voussé (coliques) (p=0.02).

Fixed? any suggestions gratefully received.

Discussion

Sue Davis (asker) Apr 21, 2022:
many thanks for the help guys. I now realise "ventralement" could refer to the ventral surface of the tail rather than the belly.
Bourth Apr 21, 2022:
between its legs "la diarrhée peut être accompagnée de douleurs abdominales, et les veaux peuvent adopter une posture indiquant de la douleur, posture qui consiste à maintenir l’abdomen incurvé et la queue entre les pattes quand ils sont debout."

HTH I agree with Tony,

For example:

"Les ruminants, comme les autres espèces, modifient leur comportement suite à la perception
d’une douleur afin de se soustraire de la source de douleur ou de limiter le ressenti."

"Modifications comportementales chez les ruminants
Position et/ou mouvement de la queue:
-Mouvement de la queue
-Queue plaquée (base de la queue contre pis)"

"Position et/ou mouvements du corps,
Posture antalgique (Dos vouté)"

You should post that as an answer, Tony.
Sue Davis (asker) Apr 21, 2022:
thanks Tony. I wasn't sure whether collée referred to tail or posture
Tony M Apr 21, 2022:
@ Asker As it seems to oppose 'tail raised', I'd imagine this means that the tail is pressed hard against the belly — I don't imagine there is any sense of 'glued' or 'fixed', but simply 'pressed hard' — cf. the song « Collé, serré... »

glued (ventrally)

We talk about the posture of calves, in the second case glued ventrally, that is, they have intestinal disorders such as colic.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : Word-by-word translation is nonsense in this context.

tail tuck

When the tail is hanging straight down, the cow is relaxed, grazing, or walking, but when the tail is tucked between the cow s legs, it means the animal is cold, sick, or frightened.
