academy to prepare competitive exams

academy for competitive exams preparation/competitive exams preparation academy

A competitive examination is an examination anywhere candidates are ranked according to their grades. If the examination is open for n positions, then the first n candidates in ranks pass, the others are rejected. Examples of this type are the Foreign Service Exam and UN Competitive Examination.

Competitive examinations are used in many countries for university and college admissions or admissions to secondary schools (entrance examination) or for positions in the civil service (Civil service examination). They are considered an egalitarian way of choosing worthy applicants without risking influence peddling, favoritism or other concerns.

I've also seen 'civil servant exam/inations', but I think it depends on the reason for the exams. Working for a local council is not the same as being employed by the state or an autonomous community.

Civil servants are those who are employed by 'the Crown'.

The “Crown” fulfils the same role at the national level that the “State” fulfils on the international plane. The Executive (the government of the day) represents the Crown/State. The Crown and State endure; governments come and go. 'The Crown', for this purpose at least, does not include Her Majesty herself - so those employed by the Monarch are not civil servants.

Civil servants are usually - but not always - in practice employed by 'Ministers of the Crown' - so most civil servants work in government departments and are therefore employed by Government Ministers.

Parliament is quite separate from the Crown so those who are employed by Parliament are also not civil servants.

And those employed by other public bodies -such as local authorities, the NHS, the police service and the BBC - are also not civil servants. Indeed, only 1 in 12 UK public servants are classed as civil servants.

Spain
The civil service in Spain (función pública) is usually considered to include all the employees at the different levels of the Spanish public administration: central government, autonomous communities, as well as municipalities. There are three main categories of Spanish public positions: temporary political posts ("personal eventual"), which require a simple procedure for hiring and dismissal and is associated to top level executives and advisors, statutory permanent posts ("funcionarios de carrera"), which require a formal procedure for access that usually involves a competition among candidates and whose tenants are subject to a special statutory relationship of work with their employers, and non statutory permanent posts ("personal laboral"), which also require a formal procedure for entry similar to the procedure required for the "funcionarios de carrera", but whose tenants are subject to normal working conditions and laws. Competitions differ notably among the state, the 17 autonomous communities and the city councils, and the "funcionarios de carrera" and "personal laboral" examinations vary in difficulty from one location to another.

As of 2013,[31] there were 2.6 million public employees in Spain, of which 571,000 were civil servants and 2 million were non-civil servants.

agree Adrian MM. : if you mean to prepare for, rather than to draw up the exam format....

I know that in Spain there are academies where people go to study for the exams. I have no idea who draws up the exams. Thank you, Adrian :-)
agree philgoddard : I feel only one line of this long answer is relevant, and that's the link to the previous question. We know what "civil service" and "competitive examination" mean, but not "opposiciones". And I agree with Adrian, "prepare for".

Of course you can't judge people by their names (I don't have a drop of Spanish blood running through my veins) but I thought that the Asker understood 'oposiciones' but didn't know what civil service and competitive exams were. Cheers, Phil :-)

Academy for candidates of Spanish state exams for positions as civil servants and public sector role

Oposiciones aren't just competitive examinations but also exams for a specific purpose. There is no equivalent in the UK and Ireland (or any English speaking country, as far as I'm aware). The translation, although wordy, would need to explain the objective of the exams for the target audience to understand the purpose of the academy and the goals of the candidates taking the exams.

Depending on the context of the sentence within the text, you could specify the type of oposiciones the academy is for. For example, oposiciones are required to work in the police force, work as a teacher in a public school, even to work in the post office. You could indicate the type of oposiciones they're preparing for at the academy? For example: academy for candidates of Spanish state exams for roles within the local/national police force.

Oposición definition in English: selective process for the admission to jobs in the public sector consisting of the undertaking of one or more exams to determine to capabilities and aptitudes of the candidate and in order to rank the candidates (Real Decreto 364/1995, de 10-III, art. 4.2, published in BOE)
