de campo

Spanish to English Art/Literary Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
This is an academic text about the bd project, "buen diseño" project in Argentina in the 50s where a number of concrete artists made textile designs:

Probablemente, el proyecto plástico y su uso posterior como diseño para telas (tapicería, vestido, etc.) no fuera siempre una consecuencia estricta. Es factible que la clasificación utilitaria, en muchos casos, fuera posterior al momento de la realización. Así, lo que caracteriza a este grupo de obras es un tipo de estructura sin foco, de campo, que se presta a la confección de tapizados o vestidos. Estos patterns de composición all over simplifican la tarea de ensamblar varios planos de tela.

I am wondering if "de campo" refers to some idea of fieldwork, which I am interpreting (loosely) as experimentation:

Indeed, this group of works is characterized by a certain malleable and experimental structure, where a piece can be used for a tapestry or a dress.

Would love input, though!
Thanks

think "rural" or "rustic" are good options and if I had to choose, I would go for "rustic"

tapestries and dresses, that are rustic in style

One of the possible translations I found for "de campo" is "rustic.

Tapestries that depict rustic scenes: https://www.houzz.com/products/rustic/tapestries

Rustic dresses: https://www.etsy.com/market/rustic_women_dress

Or just "rustic tapestries/rustic dresses".

Or just "rustic in style", because, based on what I see in your context, you might not necessarily want to directly couple the expression with "tapestries and dresses" in your translation.

Or possibly "a rustic framework/model" if you want the phrase to stand alone like it does in the source text.

agree Stephanie Ament : I interpret this as meaning rustic as well. It aligns with "estructura sin foco," which contrasts una "consecuencia estricta." On a side note, the Spanglish in this passage is interesting :)

Thanks, Stephanie. I had forgotten about this one a long time ago, because I've answered so many other questions in the interim!

rural

"...a kind of unfocused, rural structure that lends itself to the making of upholstery or dresses"

Meaning local or of the countryside.
