French term
souffle
French to English
Medical
Medical (general)
Second question regarding the bit in brackets!
The word "souffle". I'm not sure what the correct term in English is here. Is it referring to a murmur/humming sound being heard at the base of the neck?
Thanks again for any suggestions :)

An AVF can occur anywhere in the body, though we mostly find them in the head, neck, spine, and liver. The connection between a high-pressure artery and a low-pressure vein can increase the blood flow through the area, which often expands both the artery and the vein. Often, people with an AVF experience some swelling, pulsing, or vibration in the spot where the AVF is. When a doctor listens to the location with a stethoscope, there is often a bruit, or continuous murmur.

A fistula is an abnormal connection between veins, creating this "gros cordon" and increased blood flow, so the vein/artery swells up. It has nothing to do with the sound it makes...
Note from asker:
Thanks for your input. But in this particular context, the AV fistula was surgically created for dialysis access as opposed to being the result of any kind of anomaly. "Souffler" is definitely referring to the sound made IMO. |
