French term

langue limite

French to English Medical Medical: Cardiology
List of observations for patient hospitalised for decompensated heart failure:

"Observation:

Douloureuse cette nuit, insomnie
reprise traitement hypnotique
majoration antalgique
tension artérielle basse sans malaise, soif ++, début de pli cutanée, langue limite
-> diminution minime lasilix + diminution béta bloquants"

Is it something to do with the patient's speech? Or actually something to do with their tongue?

Discussion

Charles R. Feb 6, 2023:
Central cyanosis A symptom of central cyanosis manifested by bluish or purple discoloration of tongue and lips and mucous membranes of the mouth.
It is seen in diseases of the heart or lungs and in abnormal haemoglobin conditions like methemoglobin and sulfhemoglobin etc. Here cyanosis is caused due to desaturation of central arterial blood due to diseases of the heart and lungs.

alteration of tongue colour, coating [and possibly texture]

A change in tongue colour could be an indicator for heart failure, cardiologists have warned. Research presented at the Heart Failure Association claims that two specific colour changes are commonly found in people suffering from heart failure.

“Normal tongues are pale red with a pale white coating.

“Heart failure patients have a redder tongue with a yellow coating and the appearance changes as the disease becomes more advanced.

“Our study found that the composition, quantity and dominant bacteria of the tongue coating differ between heart failure patients and healthy people.”

The tongue aspect is close to abnormality which would point to cardiac failure.
Note from asker:
Thank you but could you explain your answer a bit more? What do you mean by "borderline tongue aspect"?

slightly bluish tongue

Symptoms of central cyanosis
This is manifested by bluish or purple discoloration of tongue and lips and mucous membranes of the mouth.

In heart failure, lung embolism, pneumonia or acute severe attack of asthma, the cyanosis may have a sudden or abrupt onset as the patient “begins to turn blue” due to lack of oxygen.

@Emily, answer to a note

I'm pretty sure you won't find a reference for that. "Limite" is colloquial French for "almost" or "borderline". When there's no word following "limite", it is implied. In this case I guess it should be "langue limite bleue" which means "langue dont la coloration tend un peu vers le bleu".
Note from asker:
Thanks Charles but could you explain how "limite" comes into this? Do you have any French references?

borderline dry tongue

From my research a dry tongue is associated with heart failure.
