How can I translate "Azote" in this context please? It appears as whipping but I can't imaging a machine belt whipping

I'd omit "by them" (V-belts must be correctly adjusted to prevent excessive slipping or whipping)... as it's pretty obvious it's the belts that are flapping/whipping.
