Bonsoir,
Je traduis une spécification concernant la conception de systèmes CVC (chauffage, ventilation, climatisation).
Dans une partie consacrée à la ventilation dans un local de groupe électrogène, j'ai cette phrase : "The essential diesel generator room shall be served by suitable fans sparing, unless otherwise stipulated by the project:
• Essential Diesel Generator Supply air Fan unit = Number of Diesel + 1
• Essential Diesel Generator Exhaust air Fan unit = 3 x 50%."
Mon doute concerne "sparing". Faut-il comprendre "ventilateurs de secours" ou plutôt "configuration de ventilateurs disponibles".
Merci d'avance de votre aide !

sparing signifiant aussi "économe", "avec parcimonie", "limité", "modéré", d'où ma suggestion

: That more accurately translates 'sparingly', but in any case, totally out of place in this document.

: you got the wrong meaning for "spare" / THAT approach a.k.a. "as little as we can get away with" would be a recipe for a disaster waiting to happen, from the Stockton Rush "school of engineering" (the one of the "unsinkable Titan" fame ...)

// These "spares" sound like a kind of back-up, ready in case "main" fans stop working.

I do think so. That's precisely the "intended meaning" you were talking about under the Reference comments.

this makes no sense in English whatsoever
Never come across fans sparing!
Extraction fans
or
Exhaust fans
would make more sense to me

: Whatever the accuracy of the source text, it's incumbent to the translator to find out the very meaning of those clumsy terms, isn't it?

: yes, as it is it makes no sense. But etymology + the technical context can help to decipher a very plausible intended meaning.

Discussion
There MUST be some "main fans" to insure input and output of fresh and used air, and they ought to be some redundancy built into the system - it's important enough for that.
So "Number of Diesel + 1" could mean that if one fan is what is needed to supply one diesel machine with fresh air, there has to be one "spare fan" available.
"3 x 50%" for exhaust fans would means you need 3 fans each having 50% of the total capacity needed, so if one fails you still have 100% of what's needed to get used air out.
IOW suitable fans sparing = suitable level of redundancy.
That's what would make sense.
The only thing I can think of that might just about make technical sense here would be if it was intended to have the sense of 'with redundancy' — i.e. at least 2 fans capable of relaying each other if necessary; it is common these days to run both fans alternately, so they wear out equally, and are also being tested.
It could also conceivably mean a 'fail-over' situation, where if one fan should fail, the other ones takes over its job.
If it did have the sense of 'sparingly', as interpreted by Florian, I suppose it might be taken as meaning 'with a bare minimum specification' — i.e. the smallest fans they can get away with. Although technically that would seem like a bad idea in the context given. But I don't think it would mean 'as few fans as possible'.
