target bonus
Dear Translator,
I am translating an Accord d'intéressement (bonus plan).
In the section 'Target Bonus Levels', I come through this:
Target bonus levels are determined on an individual basis and communicated to Participants at the start of the Plan Year. The bonuses at different performance points are as follows:
• The threshold bonus is 75% of the target bonus level
• The target bonus is 100% of the target bonus level
• The stretch bonus is 200% of the target bonus level
The target bonus is 100% of the target bonus level ? What is this supposed to mean?
La prime cible (ciblée) est égale à 100% du niveau de la prime cible/ciblée.
Merci de votre aide,

First thing first - you have to look at the whole of:
"target bonus level"
The "targets" here are performance targets, that are rewarded by a bonus varying with performance levels compared with this "target bonus level".
This "target bonus level" is a kind of "base level" representing 100% (the "base") of the performance needed for a "full basic bonus".
Achieving at least 75% of this "target bonus level" is rewarded with a "threshold bonus"
Achieving the double (200%) of this "target bonus level" is rewarded with a "stretch bonus"

The way the bonus system in sales work is that you have to makes sales to get a bonus.

• The threshold bonus is 75% of the target bonus level
• The target bonus is 100% of the target bonus level
• The stretch bonus is 200% of the target bonus level

Targeted levels of achieved/confirmed sales leading to a bonus are determined on an individual basis and communicated to Participants at the start of the Plan Year. The bonuses at different performance points are as follows:
• The threshold bonus is 75% of the target bonus level
(i.e. when the "performance point (=the sales made)" is at 75% of the base/reference target OF SALES)
• The target bonus is 100% of the target bonus level
(i.e. when the "performance point (=the sales made)" is at 100% of the base/reference target OF SALES)
• The stretch bonus is 200% of the target bonus level
(i.e. when the "performance point (=the sales made)" is at 200% of the base/reference target OF SALES)
IOW each sales person is given their own "reference/target level of sales" giving them a 100% bonus if and when achieved, or a bigger or smaller bonus (see the 75% and 200% parts) depending how much sales they make.
This part of the ST says NOTHING about how much are these bonuses, it only gives the levels of sales ("performance levels") that give right to these 3 types of bonuses.
Another way of looking at it, "la preuve par l'absurde" - not the most elegant method but definitely a "fool-proof" one that will cut trough any purely linguistic ambiguity:
meaning here that in real life there is no such thing as an "incentive scheme" that would give sales people "targets of bonuses" (i.e. how much bonuses they must make). Real-life salespeople will only ever be given "targets" of sales to make if they want a bonus.

HERE "target bonus level" = objectifs de volume de ventes chiffré (individuellement pour chaque membre de l’équipe de vente).
You have TWO connected but DISTINCT variables:
-- one is the "sales performance"
-- the other one is the bonus that goes with different levels of sales performance.
In this ST "target bonus level" is about the "sales performance":
For example, if a sales team member has been given his/her individual "target bonus level" of say 1.000.000 in sales, then
making 750.000 in sales will get this salesperson a "threshold bonus"
making 1.000.000 in sales will get this salesperson a regular/basic "bonus"
making 2.000.000 in sales will get this salesperson a "stretch bonus"
BUT the modalities of calculating the amounts paid for as threshold/basic/stretch bonus must have been detailed somewhere else in the ST, this part is only about "levels of sales performance" required to qualify for a bonus.
Agree that the wording used in this ST is not the clearest one.
Using the word "bonus" in describing a number that is in fact a "volume of sales (required to qualify for a bonus)" can be confusing / misleading.

Dans cette clause il ne s'agit pas de "niveaux de primes" - il est question des "niveaux/seuils de volumes de ventes" qui donnent droit à différents types de primes.

Note from asker:
Thanks for your input on this Daryo, I'll go for this one, definitely. |
@Daryo, donc, si on revient à ma question, target bonus levels = objectifs chiffrés. Et donc : la prime cible représente 100 % des objectifs chiffrés la prime seuil = 75 % des objectifs chiffrés la prime optimale = 200 % des objectifs chiffrés |
@Daryo, merci beaucoup pour toutes ces explications ! |

: Makes no sense at all // No one stops any employee from going above this "target bonus level" - ***on the contrary, the whole point of bonuses is to push people to go as high as possible*** - hardly what you'd call a "maximum"?
