SPAIN. Another query from this paper about Spanish students on Human Resources and Labour Relations degree courses, concerning work placement/internships. I understand the meaning, but so far I'm only coming up with things like 'tread the boards' (too theatrical) or 'getting their sea legs' (too nautical). All suggestions welcome.

Puede sugerir poner los pies en el suelo de forma indirecta pero la principal idea de pisar el terreno en general y en este caso es conocer la realidad, pasar a la práctica, ponerse en acción o en marcha, cosas que se sugieren con lo de contacto con la realidad.
Se me ocurre act in [the] field, algo que remita a poner en práctica, ejercer o actuar en un escenario o un contexto real.

PS The expression appears several times throughout the article, so ideally I'd like at least one synonym, if not more... In fact, one possibility has just occurred to me, but I'll keep it under my hat for now to see if anyone else comes up with it as well.

I suggest field experience. I understand that you are referring to the internships that students do as part of their university training where they acquire certain competencies as indicated in the text.

The references below also mention phrases like hands-on and real life experience.
