Spanish term

paidocentrista

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy Thesis
SPAIN. I can't find a definition of this word anywhere. I suspect they may just have made it up.

"Se destaca la necesidad de apostar por una educación en pro de un enfoque paidocentrista, fomentando la espontaneidad, diversidad y atención a los intereses y necesidades del alumnado."

Domini Lucas Jan 24:
@lexophobia That makes sense!
neilmac (asker) Jan 24:
Lexophobia I'm tempted to use "paedocentric", but there is such squeamishness about anything with "pàedo" in it in English-speaking society nowadays that I'll probably end up using "child-centred" or similar.
Domini Lucas Jan 24:
@neilmac If of help to you, the Greek does literally mean child centred. I don't know the English term though. However, in care settings we talk of person-centred care (though in Spanish that is usually cuidados centrado en la persona rather than a derivative of centrista). So child-centred would seem logical and it 'is a thing' as you know. Or paedocentric as you say, as per references below (Googled not known to me beforehand). Bests. :-)
Child-oriented I would go with child-oriented, as student-oriented would be a bit redundant in this context, and also this term closely matches its etymological roots.

Cheers I've been translating educational texts for a couple of decades, and this is the first time I've come across this term. I'm familiar with child-centred/pupil-centred/student-centred...
peter jackson Jan 23:
If it refers to primary education, I’d use “child-centred”.
neilmac (asker) Jan 23:
PS Apparently it's "paedocentric/paedocentrism" in English. Way to complicate things. I'm closing the query now.
peter jackson Jan 23:
Just what I wrote in a comment but doesn’t seem to have uploaded. Has now.
peter jackson Jan 23:
Isńt it just “child-centred” or “student-centred”?
neilmac (asker) Jan 23:
I did find: El paidocentrismo es un concepto propuesto por Comenio (1592-1670) que se basa en entender al estudiante como centro del proceso educativo, ... so maybe it just means "student-centred learning".

Slightly odd English but: "All other things such as the teacher, the curriculum and the schools are in the background Sir John Adams called this concept as Paedocentric education." (the 'as' is odd of course, so not sure of source). However wondering if looking up Sir John Adams and Pesalozzi and Foebel (who feature further down in paragraph) might get you some hits?

Sorry - the not UK English referred to the mahatma-gandhi-university quote which comes at the end. Didn't realise the notes would be added to the top!
