A man describes his work in a watch factory in the 1950s when components were still being inspected and adjusted by hand.
He says he set up a "système de pré-ajustement et de contrôle par un système de projection" after which only simple manual adjustment was required.
I've found references to laser projection systems in manufacturing, but this is in the 1950s so that seems unlikely.
Does anyone have an idea what this "système de projection" could be?

: I think I'd make this easier to understand by saying something like 'a system that projected silhouettes of the parts onto a screen.'
