Spanish to English Art/Literary Linguistics Soap Opera
Same Mexican soap opera script. A suggestion by one of the hero's ex-lovers: "Vamos a comer mofongo con pollo para alegrarnos la vida y revivir viejos tiempos."

What is "mofongo"?

What I mean is, sometimes leaving things untranslated confuses the audience who is not familiar with a term, and they end up focusing on that instead of on the rest of the story, like they are supposed to. Right? Just my 2��'s worth ;)

Anyway, given the additional context, I wouldn't go so far as not translating it, though it depends on your target audience, of course. I'd probably go with a generic description/name, unless saying mofongo is critical... ?! Good luck! ;)

I think you are right, Maria Teresa. The character might actually be Puerto Rican. I havn't gotten through the whole script yet, and you know how it goes with soapies... we'll probably find out that "she" is actually "he", and is the father of his own gay lover, or some such.... :)

In fact, at this point in the script, it isn't even clear if this person is male or female! I kid you not... You only ever get to see hints, like phone calls or letters, and distant shots, but no indication as to gender.

Anyway, I think you are absolutely right about him/her being Puerto Rican. Some of the terms he/she uses just do not sound very Mexican at all.

I'm surprised it's mentioned in a Mexican script. As far as I know, mofongo is a Caribbean dish (Cuba, Pto. Rico), is the character not Mexican, maybe? I could be wrong, though, maybe it *is* a Mexican dish, and completely different from the Caribbean one

It's the name of a dish, so you could leave it untranslated - "mofongo with chicken".

agree AnaAngelica Amador : There is no translation for this term, only a desciption. Actually, even though this is a typical Puerto Rican dish, the name of this dish remains from their African roots, that left other words like "conga" and "bongó." Probably from Yoruba dialect.
