In addition to naturally occurring sand grains, man-made or specially engineered proppants, such as resin-coated sand or high-strength ceramic materials like sintered bauxite, may also be used. Proppant materials are carefully sorted for size and sphericity to provide an efficient conduit for production of fluid from the reservoir to the wellbore.

Смысл вовсе не в mesh, а в том, что облегченный проппант легче смешивается с гелем и образует требуемую консистенцию пачек расклинивания. К тому же, "Легкий проппант" (именно таким жаргонным словечком принято пользоваться на некоторых месторождениях Западной Сибири) не так быстро выпадает в осадок и констолидируется => легче выносится при отработке скважины.
Хотя (извиняюсь, если офф-топик) многие наши геологи с сомнением относятся к упомянутому "волшебству". Жизнь показала, что традиционные методы ГРП более надежны и менее затратны (что особенно важно в наше нелегкое время )
