Catalan term
tancar amb estopa
Catalan to English
Law/Patents
This appears in a trademark register list, class 17. The whole phrase is: matèries que serveixen per calafatar, tancar amb estopa i aïllar. I have translated calafatar as "to caulk." Does tancar amb estopa have a different meaning?

Re-re-hola. That goes for "materies que serveixen per calafatar", would you believe it... "Slag wool(insulator)" for aïllar. Not sure for "tancar amb estopa" although it could've sthg to do with "steel (or mineral) wool insulation", 'fraid dunno enough about these patent matters. Check it out, there heaps of insulators in the page below and, remember, if they specify so much in the original, it must be for a good reason. Piperpat's cool, ain't it? Cheers :-)

caulk
According to the hiperdiccionari
Calafatar is defined as "Tapar amb estopa els coments de les posts o taules dels vaixells" -
In other words I think the phrase after Caulk, is merely to define "calafatar" for those unfamiliar with the term. If you think your target reader will understand caulk, then "no cal" explaining it to them :-)
Cheers,
Berni
