English term

Because they just 'rrrrrgggggghhhh!!!!!'

English to French Marketing General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Parler pirate
Ohé, matelots !

Je demande humblemement et prestement les avis des capitaines des mots ! Je quête des informations sur des sites de parler pirate français mais ne suis pas sûr d'aborder la phrase comme il faut !

"It’s National talk like a pirate day.
Do you know why pirates are called pirates?
***Because they just 'rrrrrgggggghhhh!!!!!'***

Comment rendre cette phrase fort subtile, mille sabords ?

Merci beaucoup !

Thanks to eveyone for all the answers. I had to choose one but it was not easy.

Vive le parler piratesque !
AllegroTrans Aug 28, 2013:
What we need to know now (and I confess total ignorance) is whether there is a francophone version of standup sailor talk.

Long John Silver The classic pirate model is Long John Silver in Stevenson's Treasure Island who is much spoofed. The standard thing to say is "Aaaaarrrrgggghhh, Jim lad!!" while standing on one leg to imitate the one-legged anti-hero. Anyone old enough to remember the Goon show and the episode of the football match between Long John Silver impersonators?
Alexandre Tissot (asker) Aug 28, 2013:
Precisely! And this pun is subtle, Captain!
emiledgar Aug 28, 2013:
Arghhh!!! Classically, English pirates in folklore say "Arghhh!!! (as well as "shiver me timbers" and "Avast!") Here the person has made a wordplay with "they just are"
Alexandre Tissot (asker) Aug 28, 2013:
rrrrrgggggghhhh is a play on words with "are". It has something to do with the pronunciation.

rephrasing

I believe that in order to make a successful translation here, you should rework the pun entirely. The wordplay in English here (are - arrghhhhh) cannot be reproduced to the same effect in French, so it is probably wiser to come up with a pun of your own that works.

How about "Tu sais pourquoi les pirates crient sur les matelots ?
Parce qu'ils hissent hooooooo!" (hissez ho ! is a notorious word used by pirates, at least in cartoons and other medias)

Or perhaps "Tu sais pourquoi les pirates n'aiment pas la Bretagne ?
À cause du Tonnerre de Brest !" (this is a Capitaine Haddock reference, perfect for Europe/France in my opinion).

Or even "Tu sais pourquoi les pirates n'aimaient pas les grandes villes ?
Car ils ne faisaient pas de quartier !"

Anyway, you get the idea. I think it is just a matter of being inventive here and reworking the pun.

"Parce que tonnerre de Brest !!" works better for my second suggestion, I think. Although both are fine, but with the direct use of Haddock's "idiom" it sounds better.
