Vertebral compression fractures
Vertebral compression fractures are commonly seen in patients with osteoporosis. It is likely that as the population ages the incidence of such fractures will increase. It has been estimated that 50% of females over the age of 80 years have evidence of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. The vast majority of these fractures are subclinical and are not associated with any neurologic compromise for the patient. It is generally thought that these fractures heal uneventfully. Although the spinal cord compression as a result of osteoporotic vertebral fracture is a recognized complication, the incidence was reported to be extremely low. Lee et al. reported an incidence of 2% of such complication in osteoporotic spinal fractures. The first reported case of paraplegia associated with an osteoporotic compression fracture is credited to Keminsky et al. O’Connor et al. reported a case of immediate and catastrophic thoracic spinal cord injury in a patient with a T5 osteoporotic compression fracture. Other authors have reported sporadic cases of delayed onset neurological impairment following osteoporotic vertebral fractures. We present a case of delayed onset but complete neurological compromise in a patient with an osteoporotic thoracic vertebral fracture.

catastrophic = severe :
"A **catastrophic injury is a severe injury to the spine, spinal cord**, or brain, and may also include skull or spinal fractures. This is a subset of the definition for the legal term catastrophic injury, which is based on the definition used by the American Medical Association".
