(It's vain and it's conceited.)

What does "vain and conceited" mean in this sentence?

Does it mean "conceit" or does it mean "futile"?

Sep 10, 2021 10:04: AllegroTrans changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): Tony M, Rob Grayson, AllegroTrans

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Excessively proud of oneself

Vain and conceited are two words with similar meanings.

From the dictionary:

Conceited:
excessively proud of oneself; vain.
"Fred's so conceited he'd never believe anyone would refuse him"

Vain:
having or showing an excessively high opinion of one's appearance, abilities, or worth.
"their flattery made him vain"

Continuously looking in the mirror in admiration of oneself could be viewed by others as a vain or conceited act. Conceit has nothing to do with the word futile.

I see now why you were thinking of the word "futile."

As Nadja pointed out, the phrase "in vain" means that something was futile, but here it is just "vain," which does not have the same meaning.

nafile ve kibirli

"Vain" için birkaç sözcük kullanılabilir. Nafile, boşuna, işe yaramaz, vs gibi. Ben nafile dedim. "Conceited" için de kibirli, burnu havada, gibi sözcükler yazılabilir. Ben kibirli dedim.

It's narcissistic

Futile would be 'in vain'. Here it refers to vanity, being conceited, possible synonym narrcissistic:

Having or showing an excessive interest in or admiration of oneself and one's physical appearance.

Having or showing an excessively high opinion of one's appearance, abilities, or worth. Excessively proud of oneself.
Example sentence:

He was so vain and conceited that he admired himself in the mirror constantly.
