English term

prep.: menu, menu bar

English Other Prepositions
A silly question, but nonetheless important.

What's the correct preposition? In or on?

Here are some examples taken from a Web site I am translating into Spanish:
(my doubts are in capital letters)

"Click on xxx IN the administration menu".

"A list of pages will appear IN the main menu in sorted order"

"Placing text/pictures IN the editor"

"All your data will appear in html code in the content field"

Many thanks for your input.

Cynthia

Into Spanish John: Into Spanish. I meant to say that the original arouse some doubts in my tired neurones. I do not need the answer for my translation, rather for personal use :-).
Thanks for your interest.

in menu / on menu bar

Generally you have menu items IN a menu.

And you have buttons/icons ON a menu bar.

You do get lots of hits for 'on the main menu', but many of these are 'on the main menu button' or something similar.

But on would be valid if you were clicking 'on' a menu.

If it's food, it's on the menu!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you all for answering my question. As explained, I am translating into Spanish (yes, always en). But you know how our minds work, you just all of a sudden question something and it bugs you. Mary understood exactly where my problem was. Hits on Google were no reference in this case. Again, thanks a lot!"

in

In all your examples "in" s correct.
Click ON the icon IN the menue.
Place the file IN the folder.
...
N.B. Prepositions in English are pretty tricky for NESP.

Good luck!

Thanks, but, the asker's put it as a dilema in monolingual (English) field.

in

Either answer could be correct, but "in" is probably most appropriate in the examples you have given. "In" signifies that the object is part of a larger group. "On" would have the connotation of being a physical characteristic for reference only. Different people think differently contextually. It boils down to the context intended by the original author.

...en...

Period. Just go straight. You'll solve a lot of trouble with this... Hopefully..

Almost always USE "EN", in Spanish.

Good evening and good luck.
