I'm not sure how to read it: does it mean "benefit communication" is one of the relevant fields? and if so isn't the wording a bit strange?

The way I read it, it means that the things being benefited are "communication, research institutes, consumer organisations, and SMEs...".

It's just one of the list of fields, but the rest of the sentence isn't very well written. So they're experts in fields related to food risk, the communication of advantages to be gained from whatever the consortium is about AND from research institutes etc.

I think that the author probably intends the word 'benefit' to be linked to the noun 'food' rather than 'communication', so the sentence would be clearer if it was rearranged slightly to read, 'the communication of food risks and benefits' rather than 'food risk and benefit communication'.
