Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Yvonne Gallagher

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Gladis Audi, DipTrans May 16, 2021:
Mon avis.
On parle généralement de domination coloniale (etc.), mais là, et pour rester cohérent avec le préambule de la Déclaration sur l’élimination de la violence à l’égard des femmes, il serait bon de garder « domination » tout en évitant de parler de « domination à l’égard des femmes » et s’il y a lieu en évoquant la puissance consacrée du genre masculin dans beaucoup de contextes, d’où la question « toutes les femmes en tireront-elles le même bénéfice » (attentes déplacées, pires formes d’oppression en représailles, etc.)
Recognizing that violence against women is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women, which have led to domination over and discrimination against women by men [...]
Reconnaissant que la violence à l’égard des femmes traduit des rapports de force historiquement inégaux entre hommes et femmes, lesquels ont abouti à la domination et à la discrimination exercées par les premiers et freiné la promotion des secondes [...]

dominance? https://untermportal.un.org/unterm/search?urlQuery=dominatio... but faire une domination à qqu'un does not sound right in French.
Conor McAuley May 15, 2021:
It seems to be a fairly straightforward journalistic text, I agree.

Again, domination seems like a strong enough word in English.
Saeed Najmi May 15, 2021:
@Conor
ST is not elaborate enough to indulge into specific aspects and motives. So, the translation aims at rendering the meaning of the phenomenon objectively.

Domination

Domination in the title, types of domination in the body of the text.

Depending on your gender politics, and whether you think the process is conscious rather than unconscious, you could use the word "oppression".

I should actually mention that your own gender politics shouldn't come in to it, you should translated "neutrally" (without bias), but perhaps the expectations of your audience and the wider context should be taken into account.

agree Saeed Najmi : ... ''They include male entitlement, domination and control over the bodies of women and girls, and rigid gender roles...'' https://www.oxfam.org/en/ten-harmful-beliefs-perpetuate-viol...

Thanks Saeed! I think "domination" implies a certain amount of malevolence on the part of the dominating group, whereas with "oppression" you would possibly be slipping into victimhood.
neutral philgoddard : I feel "domination" sounds really odd in the context, and "oppression" is too strong because it implies deliberateness. This is just saying that the cards are stacked against women.

I think it's a case where the word ISN'T a faux ami. I hate saying this, because I find myself doing it quite often, but I don't think "domination" in French is the right word, it's too strong, at least in the context of most of Western Europe.
agree Gladis Audi, DipTrans : Oui, notamment pour rester cohérent avec la termino de la Déclaration sur l’élimination de la violence à l’égard des femmes, proclamée par l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies le 20 décembre 1993 [résolution 48/104]

Merci Gladis ! Etant masculin, d'un certain âge, je ne suis pas bien placé pour me prononcer...mais je sais traduire.

"Inequality" would be another obvious choice.

subjugation

Hello
I'm sure Verity knows the word "domination" so if she hesitates to use it, she must have good reasons.
Here is a good alternative IMHO
Example sentence:

Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : Whilst this is a factor, the word does not fit the article (see link provided by Phil) and is a tad too strong
