When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.
Proposed translations
Domination
Depending on your gender politics, and whether you think the process is conscious rather than unconscious, you could use the word "oppression".

I should actually mention that your own gender politics shouldn't come in to it, you should translated "neutrally" (without bias), but perhaps the expectations of your audience and the wider context should be taken into account.

Thanks Saeed! I think "domination" implies a certain amount of malevolence on the part of the dominating group, whereas with "oppression" you would possibly be slipping into victimhood.

: I feel "domination" sounds really odd in the context, and "oppression" is too strong because it implies deliberateness. This is just saying that the cards are stacked against women.

I think it's a case where the word ISN'T a faux ami. I hate saying this, because I find myself doing it quite often, but I don't think "domination" in French is the right word, it's too strong, at least in the context of most of Western Europe.

Merci Gladis !

subjugation
I'm sure Verity knows the word "domination" so if she hesitates to use it, she must have good reasons.
Here is a good alternative IMHO

: Whilst this is a factor, the word does not fit the article (see link provided by Phil) and is a tad too strong

Discussion
Recognizing that violence against women is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women, which have led to domination over and discrimination against women by men [...]
Again, domination seems like a strong enough word in English.
ST is not elaborate enough to indulge into specific aspects and motives. So, the translation aims at rendering the meaning of the phenomenon objectively.
