French term

infiltré

French to English Medical Medical (general)
Context:
A patient who developed a large rash on the backs of her hands and the fronts of her arms after sun exposure (thought to be drug induced).

Clinical examination:
Backs of hands: red, squamous, [infiltré]
Arms: multiple confluent nummular eczema lesions.

I need some help with the correct English term for "infiltré" in this context. Do you think this is referring to thickened skin (as a result of scratching etc)?
I know that eczema can also lead to blistering, but as the skin is scaly here, it is more likely to be dry.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion

Drmanu49 Jul 4, 2013:
Michael, strictly on a lexical level in this context, I would understand infiltré as progessively coming from within, posssibly between 2 strata, whereas induré would be a well defined margin (harder on palpation). But I may be wrong and haven't asked my favorite dermatologist yet? She is in Corsica and I am in Ukraine!
Michael Barnett Jul 3, 2013:
@Drmanu Sorry, no room to reply below. What does infiltration feel like? There is no such tactile sensation in English. I suspect the English word we are looking for is induration.

Will do!
Here is the context in French for this one:
Elle avait donc eu un traitement antibiotique ... Elle avait ensuite été à la côte où les dos des mains et les bras avaient été exposés au soleil. Est apparue par la suite une éruption importante sur les dos des mains et les faces externes des bras.
Examination clinique: dos des mains: peau rouge, squameuse, infiltrée
Bras: de multiples lésions eczémateuses nummulaires confluentes

Kindly provide all context in French in future, as this makes research easier.

neutral Michael Barnett : Hi Manu. I am having trouble with this. What is your understanding of "infiltrated" in this context? What is infiltrating what? Usuually in dermatology we speak of infiltration with white blood cells, but that would require a biopsy, and this is an exam

As in infiltrated dermatosis, detected on palpation.
