French term

dermohypodermite nécrosante à pneumocoque

French to English Medical Medical (general)
A woman had liposuction surgery, as a result of which she was infected 'par un germe de streptococcus pneumonaie, à l'origine d'une *dermohypodemite nécrosante à pneumocoque*. From research on Google, I understand this to mean that she contracted some form of 'necrotising cellulitis' (maybe??) but I am struggling to work out how to translate the entire term, so any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

There are no references to dermohypodermitis on the American Academy of Dermatology site.

Thanks very much to everyone for your suggestions so far. Liz, apologies for not having got back to you sooner but there is no indication (to my knowledge) in the French that the patient's condition was life-threatening. The text just says that her condition 'a connu une évolution favorable, mais ... a causé des délabrements cutanés majeurs'. Hope this helps clarify the matter.
Sue Davis Jul 7, 2020:
@DrManu I think both terms are general, dermohypodermite on its own simply means inflammation of the skin/hypodermis. Cellulitis is given specificity by the qualifying terms.
Drmanu49 Jul 7, 2020:
Cellulitis is much broader or less specific a term than dermohypodermitis. To say the term is used only by by non-native speakers is wrong.
Sue Davis Jul 7, 2020:
@asker please see the ref I have posted in my answer by an American MD
Drmanu49 Jul 7, 2020:
The article was copy edited and published by native english speakers. And are M Lindsay Grayson, ‎Suzanne M Crowe, ‎James S McCarthy A Turner French authors?
Sue Davis Jul 7, 2020:
@DrManu the cl. clinicaltrials.gov article you have cited is by French authors
liz askew Jul 6, 2020:
also, Drmanu's suggestion is a life-threatening condition. Is there any suggestion of this in your text, just to be sure you choose the right translation:)
liz askew Jul 6, 2020:
Hi again, the clue may well be "pneumococque" if you search with "dermohypodermitis" nil comes up with pneumococcus/pneumococcal, whereas with "cellulitis" there are loads of hits with "pneumococcal". Interesting...
liz askew Jul 6, 2020:
of interest too:
Necrotizing dermohypodermitis is a superficial infection (necrotizing cellulitis, erysipelas) confined to the cutis and subcutis. The rapid necrotizing process primarily affects the superficial fascia, after which the bacteria proliferate and secondarily invade the subcutaneous tissue.
Drmanu49 Jul 6, 2020:
That kind of statement would make some Americans laugh... clinicaltrials.gov is certainly not managed by non-native speakers. Also check Logan Turner's Diseases of the Nose, Throat and Ear or Kucers' The Use of Antibiotics Sixth Edition.
Sue Davis Jul 6, 2020:
@Sarah - I think you will find that "dermohypodermitis" is only used in English by non-native speakers.
Drmanu49 Jul 6, 2020:
Yes Liz.
liz askew Jul 6, 2020:
Did you mean: pneumococcal infection dermo hypodermitis

Pneumococci
S pneumoniae bacteria may live in the throat and nose of healthy people. They produce a sticky substance on their outer shell which enables them to attach to the lining of the nose or throat and invade, causing infections in some patients. Most infections involve the respiratory tract or meninges but pneumococci occasionally causes cellulitis. Cellulitis due to pneumococci usually affects patients with connective tissue disease or HIV infection.

Necrotizing skin infections, including necrotizing cellulitis and necrotizing fasciitis, are severe forms of cellulitis characterized by death of infected skin and tissues (necrosis). The infected skin is red, warm to the touch, and sometimes swollen, and gas bubbles may form under the skin.

Cellulitis Due to Streptococcus pneumoniae: Case Report and Review
Abstract
Although Streptococcus pneumoniae remains the most common cause of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia, its involvement in skin infection is notably infrequent. A review of the literature uncovered only 13 cases of pneumococcal cellulitis in adults. Distinguishing features of skin infection by S. pneumoniae included the presence of bullae, brawny erythema, and a violaceous hue in the affected skin area. Most patients with pneumococcal cellulitis had chronic illnesses or were immunocompromised because of drug or alcohol abuse. Even with appropriate antimicrobial therapy, many patients required prolonged hospitalizations and surgery for cure. We report a case of primary pneumococcal cellulitis with secondary bacteremia in an alcoholic patient who required extensive surgical therapy and whose course was additionally complicated by acute glomerulonephritis

treptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a Gram-positive bacterium that is responsible for the majority of community-acquired pneumonia. It is a commensal organism in the human respiratory tract, meaning that it benefits from the human body, without harming it. However, infection by pneumococcus may be dangerous, causing not only pneumonia, but also bronchitis, otitis media, septicemia, and meningitis.
