French term

infission

French to English Tech/Engineering Petroleum Eng/Sci
In an "End of drilling report", I found "infission" several times. I guess it means penetration, but is there an actual technical word in English?

"Première infission de la colonne-guide jusqu'à 73,50 m avec mouton Delmag D 22.
Pénétration avec son poids propre jusqu'à 55,80 m
Infission réelle 20 m
Refus final 1,5 mm/coup
Seconde infission de la colonne-guide jusqu'à 51,90 m avec mouton Delmag D 22.
Pénétration avec son poids propre jusqu'à 75,80 m et de 76,60 m à 80,70 m
Infission réelle 28,40 m
Refus final 1,5 mm/coup"

"Après la première infission du tube-guide (sabot à 73,50 m), on a foré jusqu'à 77 m avec trépan 26"..."

Discussion

Virgile (asker) Jun 24, 2011:
I had to give my translation back. After looking at the process involved in driving a conductor pipe into soft sediment on the seabed using a pile driver, I used "Drive" for "Infission" and "Actual drive distance" for "Infission réelle". Infusion is a term used in coal mining and work on land and I think had no place in off-shore drilling.
B D Finch Jun 24, 2011:
Typo? Though the letters "u" and "i" are next to one another on the keyboard, the double S would need explaining. Googling comes up with examples in both French and English of "infission", but no definition. The word doesn't appear in Le Grand Robert. I now suspect that it is not a typo, but an obscure technical term.
Virgile (asker) Jun 24, 2011:
For B.D Finch: this text was typed in 1971!
Virgile (asker) Jun 23, 2011:
This is off-shore exploratory drilling, not coal drilling... Is there an infusion phase in this case?
B D Finch Jun 23, 2011:
OCR Could this be a repeated OCR error for infusion?

Sorry, your answer was not fitting the context of off-shore drilling. See discussion above. Thanks for trying though!
