Vertiefungsmodul

German to English Other Education / Pedagogy University module titles
Hi Everyone!

I'm translating module and course titles for a university from German into British English. As part of its internationalisation efforts, the university plans to provide graduates with transcripts in English (using my translated list), to help them get off to a good start in their careers outside Germany.

I have an alphabetised list, not listed by subject / programme / faculty etc.

The problem is that there are a lot of modules which do not just have a title referring to the content, but seemingly also to the level of the module, to indicate where in the degree programme it fits in. And sometimes the title doesn't mention any content/subject at all!

For example:
Vertiefungsmodul 1
Vertiefungsmodul: Politische Kommunikation
Aufbaumodul Frühe Neuzeit
Ausbaumodul 1 Sprache
Aufbau und Vertiefung (here I thought of 'Extension and Consolidation" ??)

I'm struggling to find clear translations that reflect this, distinguish the different levels, and would be understandable and natural to an English-speaker.

The terms causing difficulties are (my suggestions/considerations in brackets):

Aufbaumodul (Advanced Module?? Extension Module?? See link below.)
Ausbaumodul (Expansion Module??)
Basismodul (= Basic Module, no great problems there)
Vertiefungsmodul (Specialisation?? but then what about 'Spezialisierung'?, Extension?? Consolidation??)
Spezialisierung (=Specialisation, also no problem?)

The problem I have with "advanced module" is that it seems 'Aufbaumodul' is used to mean a module/class that 'baut auf etwas auf' but also that can be 'aufgebaut' upon. And it doesn't help with the other terms - particularly 'Vertiefungsmodul' which would also be more advanced than the 'Basismodul'.

I also find it hard to distinguish which order the modules come in - is Aufbaumodul more or less advanced than Vertiefungsmodul? Or are they different names for the same thing?

I'd be grateful for all your comments and suggestion on this confusing issue!!

Consolidation Module This webpage uses "consolidation module" as the translation for "Vertiefungsmodul", but it's Swiss.

@CMF Trier Did you have a look at the German site of the University. Sometimes that helps to discover the criteria for these Modules. There usually would be a beginner or 1st Modul (that seems to be your Basismodul), than an intermediate Modul or 2nd Modul (Ausbaumodul?) and finally an advanced or 3rd Modul(Aufbau und Vertiefungsmodul?) If there are more than 3 Modules for a subject I should try to enumerate them (Basic 1, Basic 2; Intermediate 1 and 2; Advanced 1 and 2), if possible according to an English equivalent Model. To get the right sequence you´ll have to get the semester sequence, to know when ea ch Modul of a subject is taught. Maybe the university can furnish you with a copy of the subjects lists and timetables.

I see your problem! How about advanced for Aufbau, and specialist for Ausbau, Vertiefung and Spezialisierung? I think you have to reduce the number of categories, otherwise it's hopelessly confusing.

Yeah, Phil, that's what I had hoped! But the 'customer' is the uni's international office, and they want me to complete the list with translations, which they would then send around to the various departments/subjects to check if the teaching staff agree - they don't want to try to get hold of someone in every dept and ask for the various explanations, and then have different translations in different departments... what a pain eh?! (Though I imagine it would be a nightmare trying to get an individual response from each academic department in the whole uni! So vaguely understandable)

agree Usch Pilz : To me this pretty much describes the idea of *Vertiefung*. You already have a good idea about the subject (from previous courses) and this module is taking you/it further.
