you could also use "enclosure",though this is mainly used for mere pieces of land and not whole towns

perimeter (or perimetric) wall

A wall surrounding the whole of the perimeter or part of it.
Not necessarily a defensive structure.

You could also use city wall, but I am guessing that your text doesn't necessarily refer to a city.
