@Robert and Neilmac - Most likely I would have given my agree to "vinyl adhesive", as Robert notes, "adhesive" covers all bases. However in my view, "gum" is more specific in the context. I couldn't avoid remembering a short poem I learned verbatim when I was a kid, 7 or 8, some 48 or 47 years ago,
