With a little bit more research, I think it might be a typo... maybe the were trying to measure cholesterol?

From the web reference:

According to this website, "endoscopic examination, X-ray studies, and lab tests can confirm that you have variceal bleeding."
Lab tests are included so Liz could be right... still not sure what exactly the abbreviation stands for...
