It seems that if the majority of units are 'volcadores' - ore tipper cars-
then open-pit would be eliminated, as these emply monster trucks or large rail cars for moving the ore.

Underground mining, whether horizontal or vertical shaft, in large part uses ore cars, either the tipper or hopper variety.

Socavón meaning a large hole or pit, my suggestion would be "open-pit mining"

adit mining

An adit is a type of entrance to an underground mining shaft which is horizontal or nearly horizontal. Adits are usually built into the side of a hill or in the bottom of a creek.

Yo creo que están haciendo una comparación con la minería de socavón, que es muy distinta a los tajos a cielo abierto (open pit). Un socavón es una obra minera, un túnel, generalmente horizontal, que sirve o servía de entrada a la mina subterránea, a cortar el tiro principal, o a veces como túnel de acarreo.
El contexto no permite definirlo claramente, pero al parecer se trata de una comparación...
