Non-PRO español al inglés Otros Religión quote from the bible
It's a quote from the bible that my boss wants to include in his christmas card greeting and I can't find the quote. It goes..
"Dice la Biblia
que después de siete años de vacas flacas,
que son los que llevamos,
vienen siete años de vacas gordas"

after seven lean years, like those we have been having, will come seven years of plenty

I would suggest doing it like this. It refers to Genesis 41, in which Joseph interprets Pharaoh's dream about seven fat cows that came out of the Nile, followed by seven thin cows which ate the fat ones. Joseph explained that it meant that the current seven years of plenty would be followed by seven years of famine, and therefore they should save food now while it's plentiful so as to be able to eat when the famine comes. So actually the message your boss is putting in his Christmas card has it the wrong way round: in the Bible, the "lean" cows/years come after the "fat" cows/years, not before.

In Spanish it's quite common to refer to "vacas gordas" and "vacas flacas" in this sense, but in English we tend to refer to "lean years" rather than "lean cows".

I do hope the "vacas gordas" are coming, for everyone's sake, but I suspect that the Genesis version is right: we had the "vacas gordas" up to 2008 and we blew all the money (and more). :)

(But that's too gloomy to put in a Christmas card.)

agree Helena Chavarria : I couldn't come up with an appropriate solution for 'que son los que llevamos'!

Well, there are probably other ways of doing it. Many thanks, Helena :)
agree franglish : Alternatively: On the seven lean years we've been having will now follow seven years of plenty.

Yes, or indeed "The seven lean years we've been having will be followed by...". Thanks, franglish :)

after seven years of drought, like the ones we live today, will come seven years of abundance

Dice la Biblia
que después de siete años de vacas flacas,
que son los que llevamos,
vienen siete años de vacas gordas

Bible says, that after seven years of drought, like the ones we live today, will come seven years of abundance.

As a note: in the the Bible it is said exactly the contrary: first come the years of abundance and then the years of drought. but you can translate the way he told you to.

agree Charles Davis : Yes: it's comforting to think that the famine will be followed by plenty, but in the Bible it's the other way round!
