Source text - English According to Babelon et Chastel, the notion of Heritage encompasses all the “goods” and “treasures” inherited from the past.
Françoise Choay distinguishes Heritage as a notion originally linked with “family, economical and juridical structures of a stable society, rooted in space and time” to Historic heritage that corresponds to “a collection intended to the enjoyment of a community stretched to world dimensions and made up of the continuous accumulation of diverse objects that gather its shared affiliation to the past: masterpieces, works and products of all the knowledge and know-how of the humankind.”
The author also distinguishes the notion of Monument from the concept of Historic monument. The Monument does refer to a “cultural universal”. The Latin word "monumentum" deriving from the verb "monere": to inform, to warn and to recall. A monument is an artefact. That means that it was intentionally built by a community in order to recall living, organic and emotional memories, events, rites, social rules and beliefs. The Historic monument is a Western invention, it is not an intentional artefact, but it is identified and selected for its historic, aesthetic and artistic values among different buildings or objects.
According to Nathalie Heinich, author of "La fabrique du patrimoine" (2009), Heritage can be considered from different points of view:
- the ontological point of view on the principle of “what is or is not heritage”, in the sense of “it should be considered as heritage or not” and “its should be qualified as such, defined and valorized as such”;
- the analytic approach, in the sense of Alois Riegl in its book "The Modern cult of Monuments" published in 1903; the author identifies different values for heritage: the age value, the historical value, the use value and the artistic value;
- the normative approach that is mainly linked with institutions in the sense of “what is heritage?” and “how should we identify and protect heritage?”;
- more recently, the approach linked with cultural history which is concentrated on the heritage representations, more than the materiality of objects, buildings and sites;
- the sociological approach that studies the operational stages and process of heritage making on the basis of empirical knowledge.

Françoise Choay distingue le Patrimoine considéré comme une notion liée à l'origine "aux structures familiales, économiques et juridiques d’une société stable, enracinée dans l’espace et dans le temps" du Patrimoine historique correspondant à un "fonds destiné à la jouissance d’une communauté élargie aux dimensions planétaires et constitué par l’accumulation continue d’une diversité d’objets que rassemble leur commune appartenance au passé : oeuvres et chefs-d’oeuvre des beaux-arts et des arts appliqués, travaux et produits de tous les savoirs et savoir-faire des humains".
L'auteur distingue également la notion de Monument du concept de Monument historique. Le Monument se réfère à un "universel culturel". Le terme latin "monumentum" est dérivé du verbe "monere" : informer, prévenir et rappeler. Un monument est un artefact. Cela signifie qu'il a été construit intentionnellement par une communauté dans l'objectif de rappeler des souvenirs vivants, organiques et émotionnels, des évènements, rites, règles sociales et croyances. Le Monument historique est une invention occidentale, ce n'est pas un artefact intentionnel, mais il est identifié et choisi pour ses valeurs historiques, esthétiques et artistiques parmi différents bâtiments ou objets.

- l'approche sociologique qui étudie les étapes opérationnelles et le processus de fabrication du patrimoine sur la base de la connaissance empirique.
