The techniques described here work in Firefox 50 and later. If you need to use an earlier version of Firefox, please refer to the article on debugging extensions using WebExtension APIs before Firefox 50.
This article explains how you can use the Firefox developer tools to debug extensions built with WebExtension APIs.
An extension can consist of various different pieces — background scripts, popups, options pages, content scripts, sidebars — and you'll need to use a slightly different workflow to debug each piece. So each piece gets a top-level section in this article, and the intention is that these sections can be read in isolation. We'll begin by introducing the Add-on Debugger, which you'll use to debug most of the pieces of your extension.
The Add-on Debugger
For most of this article we'll use the Add-on Debugger. To open the Add-on Debugger:
open Firefox
enter "about:debugging" in the URL bar
check the box labeled "Enable add-on debugging"
click the "Debug" button next to your extension
click "OK" in the warning dialog.
You'll then see a new window open. The main Firefox window will be switched into the foreground, so you'll have to click on the new window to bring it in front.

The 1990 census reported that the U.S. African American population grew about 10 percent between 1980 and 1990, for a count of 29,427,000, or about 12 percent of the country’s total population. In 2007, the estimated population figures saw some change (Figure 10.1). How many Americans of African descent speak African American Vernacular English is a relevant but difficult question, in part because there is no definition of AAE or AAVE that has wide consensus.
Various authors have put the number of AAVE speakers between 80 and 90 percent of the African American population (Baugh 1983; Rickford 2000). What can be said with more certainty is that AAVE speakers come from all socioeconomic backgrounds and circumstances. Further, while not all persons of African ancestry speak AAVE, the language is spoken by people who are not African American. Children and adolescents learn the language they hear around them, regardless of race or ethnicity. A blond, blue-eyed child raised with African American playmates in an African American community where AAVE predominates will in fact, learn AAVE – though she may also learn other
varieties of English at the same time.
Stereotypes about AAVE speakers (for example, that it is primarily the language of the
poor who live in large cities) originate primarily through the information and entertainment industries which have “conveyed the impression that Black speech was the lingo of
criminals, dope pushers, teenage hoodlums, and various and sundry hustlers, who spoke
in ‘muthafuckas’ and ‘pussy-copping raps’” (Smitherman 1988: 84).
There are dozens of websites that exist only to mock African American English (often
referred to as Ebonics). 7 On some of these sites, classic literature has been translated into
what is supposed to be Ebonics; on others you will find quizzes to test how Black you are
or how well you “speak Ebonics,” as seen in Figure 10.2.

She closed the diary she’d inadvertently discovered in Rachel’s bedroom and frowned.
Wow, she’d had no idea Rachel was into Santa. She’d heard about women who got turned on by the red-and-black clad, white-bearded guy but…sweet and quiet Rachel?
She would never have guessed. Not in a million years.
She placed the diary back beneath the cushion of the chair by Rachel’s writing desk. She hadn’t meant to pry, truly she hadn’t. She’d just been doing the housecleaning for Rachel’s homecoming and she’d found her diary purely by accident.
