Translation - English Resulting from a lack of conclusive evidence, the age of the temple at Karnak and the origin of the Amun cult have long been subjects of debate, but it recently has become possible to propose a couple of new hypotheses on the development of the site and the rise of the Amun cult.
The course of the Nile has dramatically fluctuated over time and the site of the temple at Karnak, situated at one point on the left bank, seems to have been a deserted island in the Old Kingdom. Following the merging of this island with the right bank during the eleventh Dynasty, the new Theban kings made use of the reclaimed land by dedicating a sanctuary to Amun-Re, the source of their legitimacy.
While this divinity was new, it was not completely unprecedented. Amun-Re combined the Memphite-Heliopolitan concept of hiddenness (imn) and the solar aspect of Re-Atum from Heliopolis with the iconography and liturgies of Min from Coptos.
Amun-Re was for these southern kings the god which their predecessors had been unable to comprehend, but which they managed to make known.
Translation - English In the Upper Egyptian city of Edfu, 110 km upriver from Luxor, stands the most well preserved of all ancient Egyptian temples. Construction of the sanctuary, dedicated to Horus, began under Ptolemy III in 237 BC and was brought to completion in several stages. Built in 116 BC, the last elements to be added were the walls around the central courtyard and the monumental pylons which tower above the temple and the surrounding city at a height of over 32 m. Similar to the New Kingdom pylons, the closed facade of the gatehouse gives the impression of this being a massive construction. This no doubt contributed to the fact that researchers have until now paid no attention to the interior of the building. The structure in fact has eight stories, two stairwells, and 36 rooms.
