Metal Matrix Composites
Immediate context: L’emploi de tels composites est envisagé dans la fabrication **d’axes de transmission** de camion ou de disques de frein automobile.
This is a brief paragraph on the uses of metal matrix composites for a textbook-type publication on a variety of different materials aimed at creative professionals and students of architecture/design etc.
Metal matrix composites are more durable (and more costly) than the metal they are designed to replace, and this is a relatively new area of composite development.
A reinforcing material is embedded in a continuous metal matrix.

I'm having trouble pinning down exactly which part of a lorry is being referred to... (UK terminology please)

In reply to Ségolène Neilson I would have said that the transmission shaft is between gearbox & differential and drive shaft between diff & wheels. For a sideways-mounted engine (e.g. VW Golf) there is no transmission shaft - there are 2 drive shafts only, between gearbox+diff & wheels, and no transmission shaft.

Have a look at the top drawing on http://www.singster.co.uk/mascot January-February 2003.html - this is an old UK make, not 'tainted' by imported vocabulary :-)

The drive axle is a split axle with a differential and universal joints between the two half axles. Each half axle connects to the wheel by use of a constant velocity (CV) joint which allows the wheel assembly to move freely vertically as well as to pivot when making turns.
In rear wheel drive cars and trucks, the engine turns a driveshaft which transmits rotational force to a drive axle at the rear of the vehicle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axle
