Describing an edition of Renoir's lithograph "Chapeau épinglé" from 1898:
tirée à 200 exemplaires, dont 100 en noir, 50 en sanguine, 50 en bistre, et quelques unes en mauve, ou en bleu sur épreuve en noir rehaussée en pastel.
I understand that there are 200 prints in this edition. Of the prints, 100 are black, 50 are sanguine (red), 50 are bistre (greenish brown), some are mauve and then "en bleu sur épreuve en noir" is where I'm not sure. I understand that "rehaussée en pastel" is when the artist makes pastel additions by hand.
Does "printed in blue on a black proof with pastel additions" make sense?
After 10000 words of lithograph descriptions, my head is starting to swim! :-)
