Here is the sentence: "Be thy better self. Highter, wheresoever thou shalt be or go, and thou shalt find thyself one with the Eternal Stillness whatsoe'ver the conditions be that round thee smart."

I can think of a number of ways to translate it but I don't know if it's an expression or just the quirky way my author writes, and I'd love "second opinions"...

Since conditions don't have feelings, I really think that it is "thee" who is being hurt. That is what I meant with my answer "qui autour de toi peinent". I could have suggested "qui... te peinent", but it's not necessary as conditions have no feelings.

Hard to say who is being hurt: it however doesn't say "make you smart" so I think it is more general - that explains my "autour de toi" answer.

It is "the conditions...that round thee smart" but I think that it is being used transitively -
"the conditions...that round thee smart (thee)" the conditions are hurting you.

What is not clear to me is: how do you determine if "smart" applies to that person or to who/what is around that person. (Emiledgar gave me both answers, one in the answer box and one in the clarification box). How do you interpret it and why (if applicable). Thanks for helping!

meaning you will be able to stand any degree of suffering or pain if you are in in the right state of mind or in God's hands.
