Catalan term

braça

Catalan to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime
I believe that the second time "braça" is used it would be translated as fathoms. But what is the meaning in the first case?

Here's the context...

Es pesca a un mínim de 50 braces de la costa (1,76m = 1 braça) i a una profunditat que oscil·la entre les 50 i 330 braces.

convert to metric or imperial measure

Using fathoms to indicate distance also sounds odd to me. The references I can find where "fathoms" is used to indicate a distance from shore all appear to be historical texts.

See: http://www.google.es/search?hl=en&q="fathoms from the shore"...

Modern texts appear to use regular metric or imperial measures.

See: http://www.google.es/search?hl=en&q="minimum of * from shore...

Therefore, Id convert the distance to metres > 83.5 m (50 x 1.67)

85. braça

fathom

Fathom is OK.
It is not 1,76 but 1,67 metre: the distance from the fingertips of one hand to the fingertips of the other hand when you hold your arms spread.
In the first case it means you can fish it at a distance of at least approximately 80 metre onwards from the shore.
