English term

fairground mirror

English to Persian (Farsi) Other Other Fairground
Greetings,

Before I retired (I took early retirement), I worked for the Foreign Office as a Greek and Turkish teacher / translator. I find comparing Greece and Turkey fascinating, and of course it'll be just as fascinating comparing Turkey and Iran.

When you look in a fairground mirror, parts of you are reflected back more or less the same but other parts are grossly distorted, totally different. I often say that with regard to Greece and Turkey, each country is like the other reflected in a fairground mirror: some things are exactly the same (e.g. the food) and others couldn't be more different (attitudes towards dating etc.).

Obviously, the difference in religion has a lot to do with this phenomenon.

If you go to http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/20... you’ll see that the woman’s head is more or less as in real life (perhaps just a shade elongated), but her legs are totally distorted, looking extremely long and spindly.

All the best, and many thanks,

Simon
