There are plenty of references to support what Jessica says: core teachers are those who teach the core program/core subjects, and I think this will have to be said explicitly in Spanish.
At 6th grade, and especially in Latin America, "teachers" should be "maestros" (y maestras), rather than "profesores". The term "troncales" is used in Argentina, I see, as well as in Spain, but I think probably more at university level. "Materias comunes" seems to be a standard expression for core subjects, with "asignaturas comunes" as an alternative.

: Yo diría lo mismo. Y también le diría a Patricia que no lo acabó de entender bien, porque académicas lo son todas, de materias, pero comunes o troncales sólo unas cuantas :-)
