Spanish term

diablo

Spanish to English Other Business/Commerce (general) Mexican regionalism (Chia
«Pido a tío Mario que las acompañe con su diablo, para traer las bolsas de Maseca.»

context: there is a village food shortage. There are long lines. The narrator's wife and a family friend go to the local tortillería to buy bags of Maseca powdered corn meal. The narrator says he's going to ask somebody to accompany the women to help them bring back the bags of meal.

What kind of a tool is a "diablo" in this context? I'm picturing a hand truck, dolly, wheelbarrow or something.

Discussion

Salloz Jan 17, 2012:
It has to be a dolly Diablo es una palabra muy común en México para referirse a ese sencillo medio de transporte de cargas relativamente pequeñas, como los sacos de harina de maíz.
Nikolaj Widenmann Jan 17, 2012:
That might be a little far-fetched, but of course we don't have the rest of the story...
Dominique Brown Jan 17, 2012:
It could actually be an the devil, or a spirit or a soul, or the evil part in the ambitious sense of uncle Mario. If its implying a food shortage, it seems to me that it is saying:

I ask uncle Mario to accompany them with his devil/spirit to bring the bags of Maseca.

It would seem as if they need the help of uncle Mario's devil to make sure they bring in the Maseca. I don't think its referring to any kind of vehicle... I could be wrong here, but that's what I understand from the short context you have provided... Goog Luck!

I know it as a 'diablito', which is a hand pulled dolly for pulling boxes (picture the kind that comes with a U-haul truck). I suppose if the Maseca bags are big enough, that would want a dolly to carry them.
