Discussion

Charles Davis Jun 5, 2012:
"Expelled from overseas" sounds OK to me. But bear in mind that "ultramar" here refers specifically to the Spanish overseas territories, ie. America and the Philippines, not just anywhere overseas. So it really means "expelled from the Spanish colonies" or perhaps "expelled from the New World" (though I'm not sure whether that term can be taken to include the Philippines, and some of the cases discussed in the book came from there). Another possibility, which would reflect the archaic (eighteenth-century) usage "ultramar", might be "expelled from the Indies".

The point is that the Jesuits expelled from the Spanish colonies sailed back to Spain and arrived in Puerto de Santa María, from where they were promptly expelled again, many of them to Italy.

The meaning of "ultramar" is the same as in the term "Ministerio de Ultramar", which was Spain's Colonial Ministry (when it had colonies): "que tenía a su cargo la administración y gobierno de los territorios ultramarinos españoles" (DRAE).

Or:

The arrival of the Jesuits in... after their expulsion (1767-1774)

Or:
The banished Jesuits arriving at.... after their expulsion (from abroad/overseas)

How does "expelled from overseas" sound?
Charles Davis Jun 5, 2012:
"The expelled Jesuits expelled from Corsica" would have been rather clumsy; you really have to use two different verbs here.
Evans (X) Jun 5, 2012:
It's a moot point, Wendy, but I would say in that sentence 'banished' is being used adjectivally and 'expelled' verbally... not that that helps a great deal ;-)

Expelled

This is the word used normally to refer to Jesuits expelled from wherever (Latin America, Spain, indeed worldwide!).

banished

Another option!

The royal decree banishing the Society of Jesus from Spain and the Spanish dominions reached Manila on May 17, 1768. Between 1769 and 1771 the Jesuits in the Philippines were transported to Spain and from there deported to Italy.

Finally in September 1759 a decree of banishment was issued against the Jesuits.
