English term

2 No rainwater pipe

Rainwater evacuation

2 No RWP located at the rear of the building are not adequate.

Je comprends le RWP, mais j'ai un doute sur le "2 No". Cela veut-il simplement dire 2 conduites (2 numbers of)?

Merci.

2 déscentes d'eaux pluviales

Yes, this is a very common usage in EN, and has appeared on KudoZ several times before; we also find '2 off RWP' and '2 of RWP'.

These are slightly dated (but nonetheless still used) formulations, commonly found in tenders, specifications, etc. and in a style common in contexts like military procurement, etc.

It can be useful, at times, to avoid ambiguity, if one wanted to say, for example 'two 5 litre cans' — '2 5 litre' cans could be easily misread as '25 litre', whereas '2 no. 5 litre cans' is clear.

In some contexts, one may find × — as in '2 × 5 litre cans', but this usage is not as widespread as it logically might have been expected to be, especially in running text.

Do note that it only says 'two' — we have no way of knowing from the source text if these are 'the only two...', or simple 'two of the several...' — it could be that there are others that are correctly dimensioned, and just these two that are for some reason under sized.

Apologies for the typo, and thanks to Proelec for pointing it out: that should of course have been 'descentes'! I corrected this answer once for one typo, but failed to correct the other at the same time :-(

2 No

Indicates "2 such items", so that the "2" is understood as count/amount of (as cardinal number) and not as "No. 2" - ordinal number (meaning "one such unit that happens to the second")
