WRITING ICONS is a fascinating look at two Ukrainian Orthodox iconographers struggling to keep alive an ancient religious art at the end of the twentieth century: Heiko Schlieper, a 65 year old man who is considered one of the best icon painters in the western world and who has just spent the last six years of his life single-handedly painting, in its entirety, the inside of a church, and Kristi Jarmus, a young woman who has been painting icons for only seven years but has already developed a growing reputation in western Canada for her iconographic skills.
