found other context on second document elects the electrical contact to be operated according to the direction of travel of the train
Mary Carroll Richer LaFlèche (asker) Oct 22, 2014:
another bit of info Contact capacity: 50 VA - 127 V - 2A max. in a resistive circuit
this is the next item concerning the contacts...does it give any insight?
Mary Carroll Richer LaFlèche (asker) Oct 22, 2014:
context Thank you all for your help, I'll contact the company for more details.
It's a part of a railway moving train detector.
Mary Carroll Richer LaFlèche (asker) Oct 22, 2014:
context I'm sorry there is so little context, it is part of a railway sensor...

@ Asker In order to be able to help you with this potentially ambiguous term, we really need a lot more context.

What are these 'reversing contacts' associated with? What equipment / plant / vehicle? What functions? What is the overall document about?

All these factors (and many more!) may have a bearing on the correct translation solution in your particualr context.

I think this is likely, though it's impossible to do better than 'guess' with so little context to work with. No doubt the rest of your context would make it clearer.

Well, what is a description of...? And how does the term appear with the other things in this product description.

Usually, I'd expect it to mean 'contacts that make something else reverse' — like Florence's suggestion of reversing the direction in whcih a motor rotates.

Less likely IMHO is the idea of 'contacts that reverse themselves' — whatever that might mean.

In general electrical usage, one might expect a 'reversing contact' to change over the way 2 things are connected; so if 1 is initially connected to A and 2 to B, then the reversing contact might connect 1 to B and 2 to A, for example.

To answer Didier's comment: a contact used for reversing would be more likely in EN to be called a 'reverse contact' (cf. 'reverse gear') — 'reversing' is what a vehicle might do, but the use of the '-ing' form here definitely suggests it is a case of reversing some situation. All this is of course, only speculation!

Ah, your new context does seem to suggest these may be contacts that make differently according to the direction of the train; so it is not 'to make it go the other way', but rather, 'the result of detetcing that it is going the other way' — so it might mean (not sure!) 'contacts that change when the train is reversing' (note of course there is no real sense of 'reverse', it is simply going in one direction or the other, neither specifically being 'forward' or 'reverse')

I don't see anything particularly (in the text given here) to indicate that, save for that 'elects' — but that could just be a simple typo for 'selects'.
Note from asker:
I wish I had more context Tony, it's a single page product description...:(
I have a feeling the text was not originally in English...
Peer comment(s):

agree Herbie : can hardly be anything else, AKA changeover contacts

Thanks, Herbie!
neutral Didier Fourcot : I see these most often called "changeover switch", reversing could also mean "marche arrière", we are in the dark

'reversing contacts' are another name for one particular configuration of 'changeover contacts' (instead of 1 going from A or B, it is usually a case of inversion of a pair of connections, as typically used for motor reversing etc.)
Something went wrong...
