English term

a sneaker route (kayaking)

English to Japanese Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation
In an article about whitewater kayaking in a river in Canada, there is a sentence saying,

(The kayaker was) trying a sneaker route around the boil.

In a dictionary, "sneak" means "done without any warning" (出し抜けの、こっそりと), but what does this "sneaker route" mean here in a context of kayaking? (easy route? shortcut?)

Thank you.

It apparently means "easier route" but I'm not sure if there is a special term in Japanese.
