Spanish term

asambleísta

Spanish to English Social Sciences Government / Politics
A text about a work by a contemporary Argentine artist:

En uno de los videos, dice Constanza Giuliani en el texto que acompañó la exhibición, se ve a “los eternos asambleístas de una fábrica de globos abandonada”.

This does NOT refer to assemblymen or assemblywomen in the classic sense of a formal governing body, but rather to participants in a popular assembly that characterized politics in Argentina in aftermath of the crisis of 2001.

Thanks

Discussion

Sara Fairen Feb 1, 2019:
“Asambleístas” are members of the neighbourhood and popular assemblies organised by (mostly) middle class professionals, students and pensioners struggling after the 2001 crisis – although some of them eventually formed links with the “piqueteros” (unemployed factory workers, leftist parties and trade unionist). So, although sometimes they demonstrated together and showed solidarity, at root they were very different movements.
In this particular context, however, “asambleísta” seems to me to refer to people actually gathered in an assembly (an egalitarian, horizontal space of discussion) within the factory (as the link indicates, “padecen el intercambio de ideas”), and maybe the expression “members of a popular assembly” could be more adequate here than anything implying that they are protesting or demonstrating...

Anyone check the glossary? I think this came up within the last year.

I agree with you It is not clear, so I would go for the widest sense possible of the word.
philgoddard Jan 29, 2019:
Hi Claudia I see you're from Argentina, so you probably know what you're talking about :-) I'm not clear whether it just means activists, or whether they're members of some formal body.
claudia bagnardi Jan 29, 2019:
I think so phil Such as workers' representatives.
philgoddard Jan 29, 2019:
Hi Wendy Could you explain what you mean by "a popular assembly that characterised politics"? Is this something like a workers' committee in the factory?
Here's some context about your artist which includes the phrase:

agree Robert Carter : Ah, yes, that makes much more sense. I had overlooked the date here, and for some reason I assumed it was earlier in the 20th century.

Thank you!
neutral philgoddard : This does look convincing because of "asamblea piquetera", but have you found any references showing that "asambleísta" is picketer?

I think it can be assumed that a member of an "asamblea piquetera" is an "asambleista", if rather sardonically, which is in line with their description as "eternos"
agree neilmac : So "piquetero" -> picketer...

Pickets

A picket (not "picketer") is a worker or group of workers who protest outside a building to prevent other workers from going inside, at least in the UK.
And, slightly off topic, there was a pop group called the Flying Pickets...
