Robert Carter Apr 21, 2020:
@Manuel Thanks for posting that, but I'm afraid it doesn't provide any more in the way of answers here :-)
Robert Carter Apr 21, 2020:
@Neil Yes, exactly that!
Manuel Aburto (asker) Apr 21, 2020:
@ Robert:

Hi Robert. Below you will find the full text that contains the term I posted.

Agree I often find myself thinking 'why don't they just use "type"...?'. Maybe the "-ology" suffix makes it appear more "formal/academic"...
Robert Carter Apr 21, 2020:
@Manuel Could you give us some more context? I can't tell whether your source text is talking about the same thing that David's references relate to. I have a suspicion, given the narrow nature of "tax fraud," that it's instead referring to what constitutes an offense in this case (tipicidad penal). It's been my experience that "tipología" and "typology" can be false friends.

classification/s of crimes

I can't say 'criminal typology' rings any bells, though I should have been paying more attention in the criminal law & criminology classes in my youth.
Example sentence:

In the United States, there are three primary classifications of criminal offenses — felonies, misdemeanors, and infractions.

Classification of crimes: Most legal systems divide crimes into categories for various purposes connected with the procedures of the courts.

Peer comment(s):

agree patinba : "criminal typology" is usually a reference to the perpetrators, not the crimes.

Thanks and yes to typology doubling as typecasting or 'criminal profiling' - a science not too far off inspired guesswork.
agree Lester Tattersall : Yes Actually I think 'crime categories' might perhaps be better, but this is the right idea.

Thanks and gracias!// Yes, that's an even better textbook term.
agree Robert Carter : You/Pat express my own concerns with "typology" here, + this is much more likely, though unfortunately we don't have much to go on, so I'm edging from a "neutral" to an "agree" here.// ;-) Problem lies not with your translation, but with the iffy context.

Gracias and thanks, Robert, for the 'borderline (SPA/ENG criminology test) pass'!
