English term
bait-and-switch
GBK
English to French
Bus/Financial
Business/Commerce (general)
Definition from
TapRun.com:
Advertising one product but pressuring (or only allowing) customers to purchase another (generally inferior or higher-markup) item.
Example sentences:
Another instance where buyers cry “bait-and-switch” when the tactic doesn’t really apply is when there are limited quantities of a particular product. A retail store owner could offer a product at a discount but also state that the offer would be available to the first ten or fifteen customers. Afterward, the product will be sold at its usual price. The event cannot be classified as a bait-and-switch strategy as the seller initially gave clear details regarding the offer. (InvestingAnswers)
If you’re using keywords that aren’t directly related to your product, service, or content, you’re using a bait-and-switch marketing tactic. You’re basically saying, “I have this thing you’re searching for!” But, when the visitor gets to your site, you give them something else. (The Daily Egg)
Victims of a bait-and-switch scam have some recourse when advertised products or services are not available as advertised. The consumer can sue for false advertising (Money Crashers)

leurre
Definition from
own experience or research:
Example sentences:

: Yes, the bait-and-switch is essentially a "leurre". The other solutions offered do not make the cut.

Le prix d'appel
Definition from
own experience or research:
». <br /><br /><b><a href="https://www.lettredesreseaux.com/P-561-678-P1-prix-d-appel.html#:~:text=La%20circulaire%20Monory%20du%2022,quantit%C3%A9s%20tellement%20insuffisantes%20que%20les" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.lettredesreseaux.com/P-561-678-P1-prix-d-appel.h...</a></b><br /><br /><b><a href="https://www.e-marketing.fr/Definitions-Glossaire/Prix-appel-238605.htm" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.e-marketing.fr/Definitions-Glossaire/Prix-appel-...</a></b><br /><br /><b><a href="https://www.definitions-marketing.com/definition/prix-d-appel/#:~:text=Un%20prix%20d'appel%20est,trafic%20en%20points%20de%20vente" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.definitions-marketing.com/definition/prix-d-appe...</a></b>
Example sentences:
(https://www.definitions-marketing.com/)

: This sounds like a subset or example of bait-and-switch, but much narrower. "Bait-and-switch" has no connotation of pricing tricks; it means advertising (literally or figuratively) X but then delivering Y instead.

Discussion
The concept is that you advertise X (the "bait"), and then when people come to buy it, you try to sell them Y instead (with Y being inferior to and/or more expensive than X). In other words you persuade people to come to you by offering X, and then when they get there, you "switch" X for Y.
For instance: you advertise some fantastic apartment; people come to visit it; when they arrive you say, "That one JUST got rented, but would you like to see this other one?" -- and the other apartment is not as nice, or is more expensive, or has less appealing lease terms, etc.
If your advertisement was a lie, if that fantastic apartment was never available and you were just using it to get people to come see the inferior one, that's "bait-and-switch."
I'm using "advertise" in the broad sense here -- the phrase is used in all types of contexts, not just literal sales contexts.
